I have had many successful hunts over the years and spent hundreds of hours in nature, with this blog I would like to share my experience and my comments with you. It could be helpful to the starting hunters who are interested in hunting. However, an interest could also be offered to others who wish to find new tricks or to read the work of others. Today, we are talking about the cleverness of the fox and how it is possible to make hunting day more effective and exciting. I will summarize my day of hunting.
Before The Hunt
It is 12th January 2018. It is 8 a.m in the morning, and since there has been a breath of fresh snow in the night, I am going to see if I can spot fox tracks. I will take the binoculars and the rifle. I choose a rifle because the fox is clever and does not come very close to the hunters. The weapon is Tikka T-3 Hunter Cal. 308. For optics, I use Vixen 2-5-12×56. All this is preparation for the evening. First reconnaissance. I choose to do my recon on the straw field because there is a lot of mice and a fox hunt for their prey in those fields. The fox is, in fact, a very territorial animal and it does not take very long journeys. Only if there is no food left in his territory.
Out on the Field
I am in the first field, and I notice fresh fox tracks. The trail heading exactly towards that field where I plan to start decoying. From those tracks, it is clear that the fox has slowly moved and nobody has disturbed him. He has taken very small steps. It would appear that the fox has been trying to listen to where the mice are under the snow
will move on to another area where, unfortunately, there are no tracks. I have already travelled many fields, but I do not see a fox or any tracks. It seems that, because of the bad weather of the night, the fox has stayed more in the forest and tried to get some food from there, because the big fields have very strong winds and it is not good to be there. I will decide to travel to the other side of the field. Where there are patches between the forest and there isn’t that kind of weather.
Almost Had Him
I leave the car a little bit further and I make my way slowly. Perhaps it will be possible to hunt something on this afternoon. From the top the small hill, I can see the fox sitting in front of me. It looks like he is warming his fur in the sun. The wind is blowing upwind from me so fox does not smell my presence. I stood up slowly and I support my weapon on the spruce branch nearby. I made a big mistake in my haste, so the thorny branch broke. The sound of rustling alerted the fox and he ran. It was not possible for me to get him in my crosshairs. He lived to fight another day.
Moral of the story is: there can be no haste to catch a fox. There is a saying “clever as a fox” for a reason. At least I got a good reconnaissance done and I ready to give another go. But for now, I am going home, where the sauna is heating up.
Remarkably, the clock has reached so far that I should pick up my gear and head for the fields. Things you should take with you. First a portable chair, for your convenience. The second thing is a tripod for the rifle to support. The most important thing is to wear a camouflage suit and cover your face with camouflage cream. The goal is to be one with colours of surroundings. The fox is so clever that when you hunt him, you cannot even move your own head.
Also, I brought small decoy whistle, which has the sound of distress rabbit. The last thing is a small ball made of chicken feathers. The ball goes in the middle of the field, so the fox can spot it. For him, it looks like a small game he preys on. If a hunter sees a fox coming he/she should be able to take an accurate shot. Otherwise if fox senses that he has been fooled, he escapes pretty fast. Leaving hunter only with a great story to tell.
So when I chose my spot for an ambush. I considered mainly two things. I have to be on higher ground and fox shouldn’t be able to smell me from upwind. The fox can come from anything direction – you can never know. It is certainly necessary to find such a place that hunters themselves are not visible. For the right spot, I built a small shelter. Using mainly branches for nearby trees.
Now we can only wait. Don’t use your decoy whistle right away. Because the first thing one needs to be looked at is surroundings. There could be a fox in the vicinity and maybe you can’t spot him. He can camouflage himself to blend in with his surroundings. Now, since there is still a daylight left, I will start using my decoy whistle. It is made by Clausen and product name is Predatorcall 3. You have to blow it three times. First and second time about 10 seconds with loud sound. Third time also 10 seconds but decrease volume but don’t change the tone. has to be blown three times: for the first time, for the first time, about 10 seconds loud and three times, and certainly to change the tone. I shall begin using my decoy whistle.
After series of decoy sounds, I realise that there is no fox in the vicinity. Sometimes it may be that the fox hides inside of a trap. Because he thinks there is a bigger competitor or another predator in the area. So he is fearful about his own life. I do not wish to sit in one place for more than 40 minutes because, when the fox hears of the decoy, he usually reacts to it very quickly. By staying in one place for a prolonged time your just wasting good daylight.
Change Of Location
I will go to the different field, and when I sit down I already, notice that the fox walks 200 metres away from me. Now I only need to be quiet and do not move. I will watch him using binoculars, and I see that the fox is constantly looking at me. Since the distance is far too great for an accurate shot. I’ll try decoy whistle one more time. As soon as I blow the whistle, the fox runs right at me. Now I will quietly pull up my rifle meanwhile heart is pounding like a crazy. Fox is about 70 meters from and still running. But it is hard to get good shot while the fox is running so I make confusing sound and he stops for a second. That second is all I need for the clear shot.
I can’t believe that the third fox of this season has already been caught. Here it is – a young male fox. The hunt can be considered a success.
